Summary

Yelp engineering culture is driven by our values: we’re a cooperative team that values individual authenticity and encourages creative solutions to problems. All new engineers deploy working code their first week, and we strive to broaden individual impact with support from managers, mentors, and teams. At the end of the day, we’re all about helping our users, growing as engineers, and having fun in a collaborative environment.

Are you passionate about transforming raw data into trusted scalable systems that empower teams to make smarter decisions? We’re looking for a technically skilled and visionary Data Engineering Manager to lead the design and delivery of well-modeled, high-quality, and discoverable data products that drive innovation and impact across Yelp.

In this role, you’ll guide a growing team of data engineers, own the strategy behind scalable pipelines and data models, and partner closely with multiple cross-functional stakeholders including engineers, analysts, data scientists, and business leaders to ensure consistent and reliable access to meaningful insights.

We’re seeking a leader who thrives at the intersection of architecture, mentorship, and impact. Someone who is passionate about building reliable systems, unlocking the full value of data, and enabling better business outcomes through engineering excellence. You’ll foster a culture of quality, trust, and sustainability by delivering solutions that are transparent, well-designed, and built to scale.

This opportunity is fully remote and does not require you to be located in any particular state within the US. We welcome applicants from throughout the US. We’d love to have you apply, even if you don’t feel you meet every single requirement in this posting. At Yelp, we’re looking for great people, not just those who simply check off all the boxes.

What you'll do:

  • Provide mentorship and guidance to the team through hands-on engineering work, including architecture design, code reviews, critical incident resolution, and contributions to strategic projects.
  • Develop clear, well-governed, and trusted data products that follow a “data as a product” philosophy to support company-wide decision-making.
  • Lead the design, development, and scaling of modern data pipelines and models that support analytics and operational use cases while driving innovation through AI assisted monitoring, schema validation, and performance tuning.
  • Define and enforce best practices for data modeling, pipeline architecture, testing, documentation, and version control.
  • Own and manage SLAs for all production data sets and systems, proactively ensuring quality, reliability, and incident response readiness.
  • Design and lead processes for ensuring data lineage, observability, and compliance alongside key stakeholders.
  • Partner cross-functionally with engineering, product analytics, analysts, and business teams to gather requirements and deliver integrated solutions.
  • Continuously improve the internal developer experience through tooling, automation, and documentation such as project wikis and runbooks.
  • Foster and build a fun, diverse, and inclusive culture that reflects Yelp’s values.

What it takes to succeed:

  • Experience in data engineering or backend development roles, with demonstrated success building large-scale maintainable data systems and deep understanding in data modeling principles and transformation workflows.
  • Experience leading and mentoring data engineering teams, with a focus on impact, growth, and collaboration.
  • Strong communication skills to engage with a wide range of technical and non technical audiences while driving strategies related to data quality standards, SLAs, lineage tracking, and observability.
  • Advanced proficiency in SQL and Python, with hands-on experience in tools such as dbt, Airflow, Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, or similar.
  • Strong background in cloud-native solutions (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and workflow orchestration tools such as Airflow, Dagster, or Prefect.
  • Familiarity with both batch and real-time processing frameworks (e.g., Kafka, Spark, Flink) is a plus.
  • Committed to creating a culture of operational excellence, documentation, trust, and continuous improvement across the team and organization.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent work experience is required

What you'll get:

  • Compensation range is $182,000-312,000 annually. You may also be offered a bonus, restricted stock units, and benefits.
  • This opportunity has the option to be fully remote in all locations across the US.
